Buying used furniture: measure first, arrange collection second

Avoid surprises by checking both the furniture and its route into your home.

Measure more than the furniture

Note width, height and depth, then check doorways, stairs, lifts and vehicle access. Ask whether it can be dismantled and which tools or parts are needed. Do not assume the seller can help carry it.

Inspect structure and materials

Check stability, joints, drawers and hinges. Look for persistent smells, moisture and signs of pests; resolve concerns before bringing the item home. Children’s furniture needs additional safety and suitability checks.

Confirm the journey

Agree who dismantles, packs and transports before paying. Protect surfaces and avoid overloading a vehicle. For inter-island transport, confirm availability and conditions directly with the carrier rather than assuming a price or route.

Before you continue

  • Furniture and access measured
  • Structure and condition inspected
  • Tools and help agreed
  • Transport confirmed
